Wabi Sabi Eye Agate Ring

This is a wonderfully unusual and intriguing eye agate cab by Gary Wilson, with tubes and swirls cut in cross section. It has an almost organic look, with very light, warm buff striations surrounded by an almost clear quartz matrix. I blackened the inside of the bezel as darkly as I could when I set it, creating a dark charcoal background to help bring out the pattern. The result is a subtle blend of whisper-greys, buff and off-white--the colors of sun-bleached sands. The undulating lines look to me like the turnings of canyons and badlands seen from above.

The setting is sterling silver layered with bronze, hammered on desert rock, with a heavily heat textured band below. The warm hues in the agate nicely complement the bit of bronze you see around the edge of the bezel. My process is all about being in the moment as I shape the metal, working only with the simplest tools and sanding media. I leave most marks, joins and solder runs in place, because I like their honesty and how they evoke the rawness and textures of the desert. All of the edges are smoothed down to make the ring appear as if it's already been worn for a long time, and the process with continue with you. It's a solid and strong ring and can go with you anywhere.

SIZE: The agate in its setting is 1 1/2" x 1". The adjustable shank is around ring size 8-8 1/2 and can easily go up or down a half size if desired.

CARE: Allow the patina to deepen and develop over time, or brighten with steel wool or a dry kitchen scrubbing pad.
