A relic from a forgotten desert culture thousands of years from now…

Here is something that’s at the very heart of my work, a talisman that reflects desert light and heat in an organic and abstract way…simple, primal, yet refined. I think of these as something from a mysterious desert culture thousands of years distance from us in time…to the past, or to the future.

The pendant is one of Gary B. Wilson’s magnificent focal beads shaped from a raw chunk of perfectly clear quartz. About half of it is polished while the rest shows beautiful conchoidal fractures and raw surfaces; all of it is smooth to the touch. I wove it onto a cord of natural European linen, adding various beads in as I went in a meticulous process that took over two days. These include glass seed beads, antique African shell discs, ancient African agate tubes and a rare faceted quartz bead from the Sasanian Dynasty of Central Asia, dating 224-651 AD.

This is a durable piece that is made for soft neutral shades of light and dark hues in natural fabrics. It really lights up on black!

For desert spirits and fearless souls…
