Sometimes spiritual comfort and nourishment don’t come from somewhere out in the ethers, but from deep beneath our feet. This strand of Spirit Beads embodies that rich earthen energy that is so grounding and centering. It’s the feeling you get when you’re far out in the desert wilderness, in the silence, and you put your hand to a rock wall and feel the life slowly pulsing there. There’s also a comfort in ancient things that tell the story of deep time on this planet, and of ancient human artifacts that tell the story of distant cultures and how much we’ve survived. Finally, it celebrates the worn, the aged, the imperfect wabi-sabi sense of beauty in wild things.

WHAT ARE SPIRIT BEADS?

Spirit Beads are portable shrines, long strands of beads and amulets made for meditation, prayer, and contemplation. They're made to be held in the hand and would be a powerful addition to a home altar. These large strands of beads also look magnificent when hung on a wall, draped over a door, arranged on a table or in a large bowl…anywhere where they will invite you to pick them up and stop, breathe, and slow down for a few moments of mindfulness.

I've been making Spirit Beads for over 20 years now. Doing so is a prayer and meditation itself and they're always a joy to create. These strands are made for your own unique needs, free of any rules or dogma, as something to help you stop, breathe, and simply BE where you are, just as you are, right now. You're free to create your own way of using them, any way you choose.

The beads also offer you an invitation to enter into a living relationship with them, which can deepen and grow richer over time. They're made to give you something physical to touch and hold as a reminder of the sacred in daily life...everywhere, and in everything. In times of difficulty they can be an anchor, bringing you back to your Self and connecting you to Spirit. I tend to use mine for centering, to calm me and still my mind, and connect to places or energies that are meaningful to me.

This open-ended style was first created by contemporary prayer bead artisan Eleanor Wiley, who has traveled the world teaching others how to make and use their own prayer beads. Eleanor's work was a great inspiration to me in the early days of jewelry designing and continues to light my way today.

When you’re not using your beads, don't hide them away! Keep them somewhere in view where they will bless and infuse your space with positive energy.

HERE'S WHAT'S ON THIS STRAND:

THE TALISMANS:

One end holds a bronze talisman I molded from Death Valley rock on the trail high above Zabriskie Point. This is desert energy at its most raw! With it is a fragment of mineralized turtle shell, for protection, and a rare raw natural citrine crystal. On the other end is an antique Kwalia: shell currency from Papua New Guinea, with the sacred spiral of eternity. With is a fragment of ancient walrus ivory from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, and a natural mahogany obsidian needle from the volcanic country of NE California/SE Oregon. These needles are very tough and are even made into windchimes. The talismans are on beaded strands or tied onto beaded deer hide.

THE BEADS:

They included recycled African trade glass, ancient walrus ivory, bone disc mala beads, raw black tourmaline, etched agate, deer antler, Baltic black/brown amber, Thai Buddhist clay mala beads with gold leaf, Mexican fire opal nuggets, fossil crinoid, Navajo juniper seed Ghost Beads, raw brown tourmaline, bone mala beads, African fish bones, African shell, Michigan caramel chert, matte black obsidian, lotus seed mala beads, antique African shell beads, South India tulsi: holy basil wood mala beads, lotus seed mala beads, Naga conch shell discs, fossil dinosaur bone nuggets, Javanese fossil stegodon bone, lava cubes, ancient African agate, ancient Asian shell, an antique Venetian moon bead, Colombian taquilla seed, ceramic, ancient Afghani bone spindle whorls, matte gold sheen obsidian, crusty handmade glass, South American pre-Columbian shell, ancient African quartz disc, mineralized turtle shell, deer antler, and a very ancient black glass bead, with Picasso finish Czech glass spacers. …I think that’s everything…

You get to decide what each of these elements means to you! I'll include an information sheet with your beads that will give you some suggestions as to how to use them.
