For this necklace I’ve combined elements from the two sides of my talismanic work, the deeply ancient, organic textures of the earth with human-made ethnographic items from around the world. They all seem to get along in this piece, complementing and offsetting one another in a dialogue of motion, texture and lustrous hues.
From left to right the talismans include: a drop of polished fossilized tree fern with a beautiful, subdued pattern; an antique silver Moroccan coin; a tiny handmade bronze drop impressed with fossil crinoid; a crystal glass amulet of mysterious purpose (probably from India…I don’t know what it is for); a long bronze pendant impressed on rock from the Topock Maze (more below), and an antique silver horseshoe or dove’s foot amulet from North Africa. All of these hang on long chains of twisted and wrapped sterling silver and bronze, ornamented with ancient Bactrian glass, bone, African ceramic and excavated glass, Southwestern juniper seeds, pearls, raw pyrite, and tribal brass. The ring they hang from was excavated in Europe and probably dates to the Iron Age.
The Topock Maze is a fascinating geoglyph or pattern made on the earth in the Mojave desert not far from Needles, CA. Made of acres of parallel rows of sun-blackened stone contrasting with pale earth, it’s estimated to be at least 600 years old and may be a lot older. No one can definitively say what it was created for, but the modern Fort Mojave Indians hold it as sacred and believe it to be a place of purification.
This is another comfortable, easy to wear talisman that will go with you anywhere!
For desert spirits and fearless souls…
