:: The Journey So Far :: Spirit Beads ::
When I made this necklace I drew from a smorgasbord of beads I’d laid out on my worktable for earrings. They were mostly small to tiny but in a huge variety and many were very, very old. This happens from time to time when one group of pieces evolves into another.
I often wonder what it is that attracts me to such ancient cultural and natural materials since my spiritual work is so focused upon looking ahead and helping to create a better future for the planet. I think it’s because they give a sense of perspective lost in much of our mainstream media. This planet is billions of years old and life has existed upon it for a very long time. When I think about all the phases that life has gone through, what has preceded us, it’s a humbling experience. Fossils and amber and ancient stone give me a sense of grounding in a deep physical lineage, but also a sense of responsibility to the Earth that holds and sustains our lives today. Likewise with the ancient beads: humans have been living out their lives on this planet for a very long time, trying to get along and get it right. I am reminded to keep trying.
Who knew there could be so much philosophy in a little strand of beads…!
The ancient and contemporary elements are all very earthy in appearance, so this is a necklace of earth and of grounding. It helps to bring you back home to yourself. Jasper and agate are grounding, pyrite is energizing and dynamic, opals connect you to your emotional flow. Turquoise balances, pearls soothe, while meteorite connects you to the cosmos, our greater home. Bone represents essence, eggshell rebirth, and so on.
So these could actually be used as an endless strand of Prayer or Spirit Beads if you want to, and I’ll include an information sheet with them when you order.
A partial list of what’s included: Two bronze discs I made with desert impressions, a little chunky one molded from Kofa Mountains AZ ocotillo, and a larger flat one impressed with Tularosa Basin NM agave. Beads are ancient shell and stone from Central Asia and South America, Gobi desert agate, ancient Bactrian glass discs and glass lips from vessels, ancient Central Asia bangle glass, turquoise, Mexican fire opal, ancient African quartz, ancient stone and clay, Baltic amber, Navajo Ghost Beads—juniper seeds, fossil dinosaur bone and crinoid, bone, ancient walrus ivory from St. Lawrence, Alaska, African snake bone, bauxite, pyrite crystals, Australian white opal, Czech artisan glass, keshi pearls, and more.
You can wear this as a very long single strand necklace, or doubled for a shorter one (see photos).
For desert spirits and fearless souls…
SIZE: L 22” when doubled; L 44” when worn as a single strand.
CARE: I recommend rinsing this necklace in room-temperature water after you’ve worn it. Then gently blot it dry with a towel. This keeps it free of residue from body and hair care products and perspiration. The bronze will deepen in color over time. It can be brightened with a jeweler’s polishing cloth.
PACKAGING: This necklace will arrive giftwrapped in hand-decorated, Earth-friendly packaging, wrapped inside an organic cotton pouch. Please reuse or recycle the wrappings.
SHIPPING: Your talisman will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail. Shipping is always free.
