Ancient Turquoise and Faience Earrings with Bronze Drops

Configured in an almost ethereally slender silhouette, these very unusual earrings hold much ancient history. The tiny, very rustic turquoise heishe beads date from Bactrian times and are around 2000 years old. I’ve had these in my collection for quite some time, not quite sure what to do with them because they are so remarkable and so fragile. But they’re perfect for earrings, and as I discovered, look amazing with bronze. Along with these are four tiny Persian/Iranian faience beads which were also once turquoise but have only a whisper of color now. Faience is a type of glazed ceramic material that was popular in the ancient world, and these are also approximately 2000 years old. I’ve added some thin disks of contemporary turquoise to the mix as an accent to the design.

Hanging from the bottom are a pair of bronze metal clay “bells” I shaped by hand. They were fired and hand finished. The attachments and ear wires are oxidized sterling silver, hammered on desert rock.

Somehow these earrings remind me of ancient Egypt…it must be the combination of the golden bronze with the turquoise. They feel very solar to me!

CARE: Handle with care as the ancient beads are fragile. You may briefly rinse the earrings with cool water to clean them and gently blot dry. The bronze will deepen in color over time. It can be brightened along with the silver with steel wool or a jeweler’s polishing cloth.
